The early adopters of generative AI, the entertainment industry has embraced the digital revolution by integrating a data-driven approach with big-data analysis and predictive models to understand consumers and their needs better. The industry now has highly interactive and satisfied consumer experiences that have opened up significant opportunities for people working in the field, with viable long-term solutions. Today, 98% of companies rely on data-driven insights to enhance their consumer experience transversing to lead generation and user retention.

How has AI reshaped Entertainment?

This industry uses AI tools in areas of creation, production and consumption. Techniques such as machine learning, natural language processing, computer vision, data analytics and forecasting are widely used and applied to predictive models in diverse domains. These tools provide accurate suggestions to the users which in turn has led to consumer retention and making profits. Today, AI is a necessity in game development, movie production and advertising, innovating creative processes across industries.

In production, AI algorithms study large volumes of metadata, perform user mapping and use this information in predictive analysis to suggest specific content to the target audience, tailored according to their likes. These tools also present accurate information on consumer behaviour and their purchasing pattern.

Personalization is notably one of the most important results of generative AI: Movies, TV programs, books, YouTube videos and music suggestions, you name it, and AI-powered algorithms provide you a list of suggestions- tailor-made- just for you. This industry of sports, games, music, movies etc is constantly looking for ways to increase profits and user engagement thus creating their brand name. In today’s highly competitive world, being relevant and adaptive is imperative to stay in the business.  Thus its extensive use and reaping benefits.

The current scenario and quantifiable forecast

According to  Grand View Research, the use of AI in the media & entertainment market reached a significant valuation of USD 10.87 billion in 2021. This thriving sector is geared for remarkable expansion, with a projected CAGR of 26.9% anticipated from 2022 through 2030.

This industry’s goal is to make captivating content that hooks the viewer to their platform and increases their ratings which monetizes into good profit. AI-powered digital transformation is a complete game-changer in today’s era, it outperforms humans in multiple areas such as image and speech recognition, natural language processing, data analysis, predictive analysis and accurate decision-making. Artists and creators can now channel their energy into developing revolutionary concepts by automating routine tasks. Automation in AI  performs voiceovers, post-production, and video editing.  It has significantly increased productivity and reduced costs.

So what does generative AI offer?

1.     Tailor-made Content Recommendation

Streaming platforms such as Netflix, Disney Hotstar and Amazon Prime, to name a few, use AI to navigate the plethora of available content, curating recommendations for users, according to their tastes. AI uses special algorithms that work closely with an individual's search history and basic trends of using the web. It also captivates a user’s mood by looking into their posts and comments and creating user types. It then uses machine learning tools on collected data to analyse the user profile. Accordingly, provide content suggestions that the user would enjoy; ensuring they never run out of binge-worthy shows. Entertainment today isn’t just a passive experience anymore,  it is an AI-curated journey.

2.     AI in Film and Animation

Cinema has always thrived on originality and creativity. Artificial Intelligence has completely revolutionised the film and animation genre into what now is a digital transformation of the cinematic universe. Right from the script, storyline and character analysis, AI-generated cinema has completely disrupted imagination and now is a must-have in Hollywood’s stage. Today we can see its presence in many recent Bollywood movies too. AI-generated CGI and facial animations have completely blown off the audiences, creating a new avenue for the story-sharing experience. One example is the Marvel cinematic metaverse, which has always maintained curiosity and mesmerized audiences with its CGI effects and realistic metaverses. It’s awe-striking to visualize and imagine such detailed effects.

3.     Actors and their digital twins

Generative AI has been reshaping creativity wherein film and TV actors are paired with their digital twins. Training a generative AI model on an actor’s films and videos,  the generative AI simulates the actor’s voice, gestures, gait, and every facial movement which makes it impossible to distinguish the real from the digital avatar.

Recently, this technique was used in Martin Scorsese’s 2019 movie, The Irishman, AI to reduce four decades off Al Pacino, Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci, not only by modelling their appearance but also by how they would move and act. The actors themselves were blown away by what they saw as reported by ‘The Tonight’s Show’.

This feature is potentially helpful for storytellers and creators could however change an actor’s credibility and value. Implications on rights and reuse raise varied opinions and speculation on the use of AI in creativity forums.

AI company Metaphysic quotes “high-resolution photorealistic face swaps and de-ageing effects on top of actors’ performances live and in real-time without the need for further compositing or VFX work”. The website says “We are world leaders in creating AI-generated content that looks real” and suggests: “Use AI to create your hyperreal avatar”. The company has just struck a deal with the Creative Artists Agency “to develop generative AI tools and services for talent”, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

4.     AI in Music

In music, voice cloning and rhythm regeneration have been a worldwide phenomenon, with AI enabling artists to rerecord classic songs featuring world-famous artists. New lyrics are sung by their voice clones, raising concerns about consent and legal rights.

Similarly, musicians leverage generative audio to enhance their work and discover new sounds and tracks. Although helping many artists create music and songs, there is a thin line between original and AI versions. Ethical use of available data and piracy law is the new requirement. The copyright law is to determine what music is “human” enough to be copyrightable.

5.     AI in Live Performances and Events

AI in live performances leads to technological enactments wherein algorithm-generated visual effects surprise the audiences, enhancing the immersive experience. As technology and entertainment converge, live shows are becoming more than just performances – they’re tech-powered spectacles that captivate and mesmerize the audience.

6.     Game design and Virtual Reality

In gaming modules, generative AI uses Virtual Reality-based emotion personification that enhances the consumer experience, engaging them and constantly studying their feedback, adapting them in real-time, thereby creating an immersive VR experience.

Game designers use these tools to enable dynamic and hyper-realistic metaverse. The NPCs or Non Performing Characters,  can act freely, with real-time movement and conversions delivering on-demand experiences to the players, which is an engaging and captivating experience.

7.     Chatbots and Virtual Assistants

Although the characters in games are just imaginative creatures, it is brought to life by technology. They engage a user, offering insights and providing real-time information. As AI tools are gaining expertise in augmenting Virtual Reality, the interaction between human and computer-generated language creates a rich, engaging and entertaining experience.

8.     Content Creation and Editing

Content creation is another avenue showing constant evolution. Content creators today use AI generative tools to create articles and design artwork. Video editing, a tedious and time-consuming process, is now propelled by AI algorithms that analyse content and craft new versions. This link between human inspiration and machine efficiency enhances both creativity and productivity.

9.     Deepfake technology and its influence

The rise of deepfake technology provides an inspiring and unsettling prospect for entertainment. Having the ability to manipulate faces, voices, movements and expressions, deepfake technology alters reality to create hyper-realistic digital avatars. Miles Fisher famously known as deepTomCruise - is a lookalike of one of the most famous hollywood stars. He makes short tik-tok videos with edits on his face and gestures - to make it as close as possible to that of the real actor. People are in awe and cannot make the difference at all. If used cautiously, it would create a magical experience for the audience. If misused, it has severe implications. This has created fear and ethical dilemmas, regarding the authenticity and accountability of digital content.

In conclusion

AI’s role in entertainment is engaging and mesmerising. AI in media and entertainment has significant opportunities for long-term solutions. But everything that sounds too good to be true always comes with baggage. AI’s extensive use has led to controversies and debates on its ethical use. It may lead to the death of originality and human creativity. One of them is a potential impact on jobs for creative people. Since AI can easily adapt to generate music, art, and screenplays concerns the future of creative professionals and their potential displacement. The ethical concerns of deep fake technology, that enables audio and video manipulation,  creates realistic but fabricated content, raises concern on misinformation, privacy infringement and loss of trust in media. There is a thin line between what is real and a fabricated version of any media post that leads to confusion and loses its importance.

All in all, AI in entertainment brings great possibilities and will continue to revolutionize the shape of entertainment. As its potential continues to grow, so does its vulnerability to misuse and malpractices. These ethical issues that need careful regulation.

AI generated content will become increasingly accessible to everyone, and it is crucial to incorporate transparency and accountability to address issues regarding data privacy, infringement, biases and responsible use of AI tools. Only then can it actually and fully develop the entertainment industry to reach its full potential to deliver good and engaging content and awesome experiences to audiences all over the world.
